“Drift” is a collaborative artwork made by Juliana Capes and Laura Cameron Lewis in 2014.
It was commissioned as part of the Edinburgh Artlink’s project Opening Lines in 2014, which combined description, history and storytelling in response to particular locations across Edinburgh, creating events for sighted and non sighted audiences. Drift’s location was Portobello Prom.
“Drift” grew to be a spoken narrative that weaves together stories from generations of women with connections to Portobello Prom across their lives. It was created, written and performed collaboratively with writer/performer Laura Cameron Lewis, and was recorded by Hamish Brown.
“Drift” evolved from the artists’ shared research and memories, informed by several events in the local community that collected stories from local residents who became project participants, forming a focus group. It considered how a place grows and changes like a person but across generations.
“Drift” was performed live twice in the community, once at the Dalriada Bar, Portobello and also as a promenade performance along the Promenade.
