“The Dark Rainbow” 2023 is a film about beauty, weather and dissonance: the push-pull of repulsion and attraction, of anxiety and wonder: late capitalism and rainy days. The artist’s personal exploration of climate and covid and cognitive dissonance.
The Dark Rainbow is also a film that integrates audio description with visual image and subtitling, putting accessibility at the beginning of the creative process, an inherent part of of her filmmaking. It sets out to question the hierarchy of the senses, with the visual elements of the film being equal to the poetic audio descriptive soundtrack. It has audio description that describes everything all at once and the visual sequences that circle back around through visibility, abstraction and repetition, never dominating, maintaining a flat hierarchy with the descriptive words. Subtitling is also equal also to the visual elements, taking on an aesthetic as well as a functional role.
